Michigan teen's acknowledgment of school shooting threat can't be used against him, appeals court says
Suspect was not given Miranda warning when incriminating statements were made, rendering them useless in court Associated Press Published Nov. 28, 2023, 8:16 p.m. EST
The Michigan Court of Appeals ruled in favor of an Upper Peninsula teenager in a dispute over a school threat and the right to remain silent when questioned by police in the principal's office.
Authorities in Alger County can't use the boy's incriminating statements against him because he wasn't given a Miranda warning, the court said in a 3-0 opinion last week.
The court said the case broke new ground in Michigan: It could not find a legal precedent that "substantively addressed the situation" in Munising.

Sued Over Student Stabbing: Evolv, Integrator, and School
Conor Healy, Published Nov 20, 2023, 09:16 a.m.
For the first time, Evolv is being sued. While Evolv has been investigated for lawsuits in the past, none resulted in action. But now a student who was stabbed by a knife that Evolv failed to detect is suing.
While contracts commonly include waivers for any liabilities, this suit is important because it goes beyond standard liability protections by alleging that Evolv is "defective," "unreasonably dangerous," and lied about performance. It raises questions about liability for partners when Evolv misses weapons. Integrators rarely get sued, but in this case, the student is suing both Evolv and its local security integrator.
In this report, we examine the lawsuit, the evidence against Evolv, the student's claims, and how this impacts integrators.

Study: Adolescent school shooters often use guns stolen from family
Nov. 27, 2023 Melissa Jenco, News Content Editor
Adolescent school shooters over the past several decades often used a gun stolen from a family member, according to a new study.
“Ultimately, this study supports policies encouraging secure firearm storage in households and limiting adolescents’ access to firearms through legislative measures, educational campaigns, or public health initiatives,” authors wrote in “Characteristics and Obtainment Methods of Firearms Used in Adolescent School Shootings,” (Klein BR, et al. JAMA Pediatr. Nov. 27, 2023).
Firearm injuries are the leading cause of death for children and teens in the U.S. Authors examined data from the American School Shooting Study on 253 shootings on a K-12 school campus from 1990 through 2016. Shootings included in the study were perpetrated by adolescents 19 years and younger and included at least one gunshot injury or death.
Help Center for Safe Schools Understand Your Bullying Prevention Needs
As we shared during Bullying Prevention Month in October, approximately 17% of Pennsylvania students are impacted by bullying. Center for Safe Schools has developed a short (less than two minutes) survey to better understand bullying prevention program needs. There is also an opportunity to request additional bullying prevention resources.
